Christop Rust | Redshift

Christoph Rust (born in Leipzig in 1953) was commissioned to create this work following a competition held by the August Kestner Museum for a light installation to be integrated into its facade. The challenge was, on the one hand, to incorporate the installation into the intricate symmetry of the honeycomb-like facade modules and, on the other hand, to assert its artistic presence within them. Rust’s concept is both playful and poetic. The first of seven lighting elements corresponds with the existing honeycombs; it reappears between the sixth and seventh segments, but there as an empty space. After dark, the work illuminates the facade with an electronically controlled sequence—and thereby the entire Platz der Menschenrechte 1, which it borders on one side.
